Gerd Kullak, MD
Professor and Chairman of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology
The Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University Hospital Zurich (www.usz.ch)
is an expert center for all issues relating to drugs and medicines
which are taken to treat a medical condition. A special focus is placed
on analyzing an individual's suitability for a given drug regimen,
taking into account his or her diagnosis, genetic background and other
medications that are taken at the same time. State-of-the-art genetic
testing is applied where necessary and the results are explained in
detail to optimize the effect and minimize the risk of a given
medication. The Division has developed its own high-end software for
analyzing the compatibility of different medications, which is unique in
Switzerland. Therapeutic drug monitoring with measurements of drug
levels in blood are carried out as required to find out whether the
optimum dose is being used to treat a medical condition. The Division
has an additional strong expertise in the field of liver diseases, and
offers specialized genetic testing for certain inherited liver diseases (www.pharmacogenetics.ch). The Division is internationally renowned for its research in liver disease and in pharmacogenetics.
